Files recover

Recovering the files.
Sometimes, files become corrupt, requiring recovery. Other times, corrupt files really are not recoverable. AutoCAD has been extremely tolerant of faults in the drawing database. Often a file that opens in a previous version is corrupt in the new version, and may react to RECOVER with a fatal error.

What can one do with an un-RECOVER-able file?
Try the following steps:
  1. Open a blank new file and call it TEMP. Insert and explode the troubled file into this new blank file. (NOTE: Do not insert, then explode; it is important to insert it with the explode button checked on in the Insert dialog box.)
  2. If the insert operation in step 1 is successful (no errors), save it, and go to the next step. If not successful, it is truly corrupt. You will need to get an old version restored off the network backup, and so on.
  3. Use the AUDIT command and answer YES. If that is successful, with no errors, save it again. You should be finished now, with a healthy file that can be renamed back to the original name. If you get an error in the AUDIT step, do not save changes to the drawing. Instead, RECOVER the TEMP drawing when you restart AutoCAD.
  4. If that is successful, you should be all finished, with a healthy file. If none of this works, the drawing is truly corrupt, and needs to be replaced by an old version from the network backup
